Well.....

Today was a day for good intentions, not so great outcomes.

We started the day early - Ma was up and ready before 8 am, I on the other hand, was sleep walking until about 9:30. In between rain drops we packed the car and headed into town.

Our first stop was Kentucky's capitol building, which is very impressive, although Ma was disappointed it didn't have a golden dome. We also stopped by the floral clock, which is so beautiful. My picture doesn't do it justice, but it gives you the idea.

Next up was finding someplace to have lunch - Anybody's Diner. I think that means anyone can be the cook. Our meals were ok, but the best part was the sign for the Frog Leg special for $5.95. The scenery and the people were the best part though - everyone is so friendly and we were at a real local place, I don't think one person came in the door (other than us) who didn't know everyone within eyesight.

Then onto Rebecca-Ruth's Candy Shop, they were the inventor's of Bourbon Balls (which seem to be a combination of chocolate, bourbon and pecans). We were hoping to take a tour, but there was no one in the kitchen, so we skipped it. I did buy some candy, but we haven't gotten around to tasting it yet.

Next was Jim Beam Distillery. Due to construction, we were only able to view a video and have a tasting in the former home of Beam's. Had a taste two special labels, I liked Booker's the best, but man is that stuff strong!

Next up was Fort Knox - took a wrong turn and almost ended up in the military base. We were able to talk to the guards and get redirected. Then tried to get to the Patton Museum, but couldn't find the handicap parking area - apparently it is a military secret. Then we continued down the road a way to the front entrance of Fort Knox - it was too late to get a "tour" but we were able to see the building that gets locked up and were back on our way to see what else we could find.

While driving we saw a sign for Abe Lincoln's birthplace and childhood home. These were a little tricky to find in between the deluge of raindrops, but we were successful after only 1 u-turn and a little help from the National Forest Service woman manning the birthplace memorial.

When we got to the boyhood home (the picture is a little fuzzy as it was taken from inside the car during the storm), Ma commented that after seeing that, our house looks BIG. It is true that both homes could easily fit inside ours with room to spare.

The in hopes of finding dinner, I got on the highway heading the wrong way. Unfortunately this isn't a 5 minute fix, 20 miles later we were able to get off and turn around and after all was said and done, we passed between exits 105 and 112 three times during the course of the day. At least I can say it is a very pretty drive, and to top it off, one of the last times we went that way - we were on the scenic byway on KY-61. We wanted to share some of our drive, wish you could see more, but i didn't think to pull out the camera until this point.

After dinner at the Crackerbarrel (9 pm), we headed to our hotel in Cave City, for one of our planned stops. After this hour drive, I was quiet shocked when the clerk told me it was 9 pm. Little did we know that once we left our restaurant, the next exist down was a different time zone. I was thrilled with my extra hour and put it to some good use, downloading photos and relaxing.

  5. Hi Kim--I'm enjoying your blog! Is there any connection between the Jim Beam tasting and Distillery and the Fort Knox wrong turn? Also, I loved the mini-video of windshield wipers in KY. It's all terrific. Have fun, Liz
